Description
A few years after upgrading its renowned EQ6 mounts to the EQ6-R, Sky-Watcher (the world's leading telescope manufacturer) continues the same work with the HEQ5.The HEQ5-R incorporates the same innovations, making it even better for astrophotography.
A lightweight version of the larger EQ6-R mount, the HEQ5-R is designed for amateurs and beginners looking for a portable and affordable GoTo mount. The tracking quality has been improved compared to previous versions without automatic aiming. You can now perform long exposure astrophotography sessions with even the faintest of objects. It even comes standard with an autoguiding port to significantly reduce periodic error in right ascension.
The HEQ5-R mount is a very attractive solution, compatible with many telescopes up to 235 mm in diameter. It allows beginners to get started in astrophotography using a PC and a second instrument in parallel when autoguiding is enabled. Visual observers will appreciate the SynScan Go-To automatic pointing system, which is operated by an easy-to-use hand controller. In fact, there is no need to know the position of stars or distant deep sky objects; the HEQ5 Pro takes care of moving the instrument to the target you wish to observe.
Improvements to the transmission system
The tracking system, the heart of a motorized mount, has been modified with the addition of a belt drive. The result is significant: a smoother periodic error curve, reduced backlash and lower noise during GoTo tracking. Patented optical encoders are now included to prevent loss of positioning during manual movement. This gives the user considerable freedom, eliminating the need to repeat the initialization process from scratch.
Stability and load capacity (from 12 to 15 kg) have been increased by increasing the size of the Right Ascension (RA) gearing and adding more teeth to each axis.

The SynScan Go-To automatic pointing system
After calibration (polar alignment) with the polar telescope in Polaris, select the alignment of the mount with one, two or three stars. More than 49,200 objects, including those from the main catalogs (Messier, NGC, IC, as well as planets, Moon and Sun), are stored in the database. For maximum convenience, the mount moves quickly, up to 3.4°/s, using the hand controller. Easy to use, it allows you to quickly point the instrument at any galaxy, nebula, cluster or object in the solar system. Discover in detail the famous Andromeda galaxy, the fabulous mantles surrounding the heart of Orion, the M13 Hercules cluster and its core, rich in thousands of stars. Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon are also wonders that can be observed without restriction.
The display of date, time and observing location on the handheld controller, along with the "Tour" function, allows you to point the HEQ5-R Pro mount at the most interesting objects all night long. Enjoy a guided tour of the sky from your observing location by clicking the "Enter" button and selecting an object from the drop-down list. The pointing accuracy can reach up to 1 arcminute by compensating for mechanical errors in the mount. This procedure, called "Backlash", requires measuring the time between two opposite movements of the mount. The operation is simple and, especially in astrophotography, saves valuable time. The object you want to photograph is usually centered on the sensor.... a real pleasure!
