A sunshield is a tube of approximately the same diameter as the telescope tube, designed to fit over the front of the telescope to reduce moisture that may be deposited on the surface of the corrector plate.

It also serves, as the name implies, to prevent light rays from shining directly on the corrector plate, thus improving contrast.
