AstroSolar® Silver/Gold® film safety information and specifications
AstroSolar® Silver/Gold OD 5.0 Film - Safety certified for direct sun observation
The solar eclipse glasses Telescopiomania are manufactured with the exclusive astroSolar® Silver/Gold OD 5.0 foil of Baader Planetarium, designed specifically for the direct solar observation without magnification, that is, at a glance.
This material is certified according to the European standard EN ISO 12312-2:2015 and has the CE, this ensures safe solar observation in accordance with international standards.
These glasses are not intended for use with telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes or photographic objectives. They should always be used directly, without intermediate optics.
An evolution of trust: more than 25 years manufacturing safe sun protection
Baader Planetarium has been producing this solar safety film for more than 25 years. During the great total solar eclipse of Europe in 1999, more than 20 million sunglasses manufactured with this film were used by observers throughout the continent.
On the occasion of the 2017 total solar eclipse in the United States, the enhanced version was launched: AstroSolar® Silver/Gold, with an inner lining anti-glare which provides an excellent and comfortable viewing experience.
Why is this film not used with telescopes?
The AstroSolar® Silver/Gold sheet is intended for direct viewing of the Sun. Its design prioritizes the resistance to scratches and frequent use, the optical quality required for high magnifications, as is the case with telescopes, is not of the extreme optical quality required for high magnifications.
Unlike the AstroSolar® Safety Film for telescopes, this version incorporates a resistant metallization on both sides, which makes it more durable and safer in the hands of occasional users.
Advantages over lower quality sunscreens
Unlike other sunglasses that employ black soot filters to absorb the light, the astroSolar® Silver/Gold reflective metallic film offers a much more effective protection against red light and invisible infrared, reducing thermal transmission and increasing eye safety.
A single layer of this film provides a clear solar image, without distracting reflections or double images, and allows even distinguishing large sunspots.
Safety even in case of light scratches
Thanks to its double metallization, this foil remains safe even if it suffers a small scratch on the outside face. Even so, it is essential to always inspect the goggles before each use and discard them if they show any visible damage.
Important warning: do not use with optics!
Never attempt to take photographs of the Sun through these glasses or place them in front of cameras, binoculars or telescopes. Telescopiomania solar glasses with AstroSolar® Silver/Gold should be used exclusively for direct observation of the Sun without optical instruments.
Instructions for use during solar eclipses
Never look at the sun without adequate protection!
Only during the brief seconds or minutes of totality of a total solar eclipse - when the Moon completely covers the Sun - it is safe to look at the solar corona at a glance.
During the rest of the time, including all phases of the eclipse (onset, partial, final), it is essential to wear certified sunglasses, as the Telescopiomania with Baader AstroSolar® Silver/Gold.
This also applies to partial eclipses, annular eclipses, or any occasional solar observation. Even with 99% of the Sun hidden, the small visible segment is still extremely dangerous to the eye if proper filters are not used.
Never use normal sunglasses or non-certified sunscreens. A single exposure without adequate protection can cause permanent eye damage.
