You've probably experienced this problem before: put the mount on the tripod and try to align it by hand with a normal spherical head. This is no easy task. Especially when it's dark and may even be cold.

Make it easier on yourself and eliminate the biggest source of error. With a polar wedge you can adjust the altitude and azimuth angles as accurately as with a large telescope. This gives you the precision you need.

AZ adjustment

Two screws allow you to fine adjust the azimuth. This is especially useful when you are close to the pole and require a very fine adjustment. When you have finished adjusting the polar wedge, you can lock it in place.
